Exam period is a challenging time for young people and can take its toll both physically and emotionally. With this in mind, it’s crucial for parents to find ways to support their son or daughter during exam period so that they can perform to the best of their abilities without becoming too overwhelmed. So, if you’re wondering what you can do to help, I have teamed up with an independent college in Somerset to share some advice.
Prepare a Revision Schedule
Help your child to prepare a revision schedule so that they have more clarity on what they should be working on and when. There’s little point in studying two subjects for equal amounts of time if your child is already acing one but struggling with the other, so consider some areas that could use some extra work when planning the schedule. You should also factor in time for breaks so that your child can rest and revitalise.
Encourage Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Stress can compromise the immune system, so it’s important that your child makes healthy lifestyle choices to avoid getting sick. Make sure they have a reasonable bedtime, eat three nutritious meals a day and get plenty of fresh air and exercise. If they spend all night cramming for an exam the next day, they will feel tired and sluggish and will therefore struggle to concentrate. Likewise, if they snack on junk food and energy drinks for convenience, they will eventually crash.
Demonstrate Unconditional Love
Make sure your child knows that you love and support them no matter what the outcome of their exams. If they are worried that you will be disappointed or reprimand them for not getting certain grades, they will feel even more stressed.
Communicate with the School
If possible, try and maintain regular contact with your child’s teachers. They will be able to suggest some learning resources that your child could use while revising, while also giving your feedback on how your child is performing.
