English studies is broken down into two distinct subjects. English language studies has a more scientific focus, helping to expand a student’s reading, writing and listening skills, developing sentence structure, syntax, grammar and punctuation. Essentially, the building blocks of all written and verbal communication. So why is English Literature necessary, I hear you ask? English literature takes a deeper dive into texts, encouraging students to be analytical as they evaluate themes, motifs and historical context. Critical Thinking
Exploring literature encourages students to consider the texts they are reading and employ reflection and analysis techniques to understand the deeper meaning behind the words on the page. English Literature lessons in schools help students recognise patterns and symbols within the writing and encourages them to come to a conclusion on what the writer is trying to express. These analysis and evaluation skills will serve students both in and outside the classroom, encouraging them to approach all areas of their lives with a more advanced level of reflection and consideration.
Broader World View
Studying literature written about a distant place, another culture or a different point in time helps students develop a wider, more in depth view of the world. Students will have the opportunity learn about history, politics, racism, feminism and so much more, deepening their understanding of the world and their place in it.
Emotional Intelligence
Literature gives us vicarious experiences, stepping into another’s shoes and experiencing the world through them. This forces the reader to consider matters which may not affect them directly and enlightens them to the struggles and hardships of others. Learning about someone else’s experience from a first-hand perspective helps students develop empathy and compassion for others. Literature can also act as a catalyst to encourage the reader to evaluate their own feelings and emotions, giving them a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world.
