5 Ways To Look After Yourself This Christmas

Christmas is fast approaching which means that we’re under pressure to buy great presents, eat lots of nice food, socialise with friends and family and generally have a good time. Whilst this may not be an issue, it can lead to feelings of stress and upset. Just because it is Christmas doesn’t mean you should feel pressured into taking part in activities that you’re unhappy with – so here are some ways to look after yourself this Christmas.

Learn To Say No/Yes

Setting boundaries is a great way to protect yourself at any time of year and Christmas is certainly no exception. There can be a real pressure at this time of year to attend events that you aren’t keen on going to and/or socialising with people you would rather avoid. It could even be something as simple as having too many social events that you are expected to attend you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed. Although it can feel like one of the hardest things in the world to do, learning to say no is a must! Although you don’t owe anyone an explanation as to why you are declining an invite if you do decide to give them a reason you’ll find that people will completely understand and many will even feel relieved that you have given them an excuse to cancel too! In a similar vein, if you are saying no or declining invitations because you are worried or scared then use this time of year as an excuse to push yourself out of your comfort zone and do things that you wouldn’t usually do – you won’t regret it!

Take Some Time Out For You

As this time of year can be really busy, it is important to take some time out for you – and the people in your house. Often we’re so busy hopping from house to house and socialising with different households that we forget to put aside time for the people that we live with, and that is really important. Make sure you dedicate some time to you and your immediate family. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, just a day where you say no visitors and you won’t be visiting anyone. You can even just stay in your pyjamas and eat selection boxes all day, the point is to spend some time relaxing without too much hustle and bustle.

Don’t Go Over Budget

The pressure of trying to get someone a good gift, provide the family with the best Christmas dinner and have the most extravagant Christmas decorations often means that we end up spending more than we can afford on Christmas – and when you consider that the Christmas season really is just a few days long it isn’t worth the weeks and months you’ll have playing catch up with your finances. Instead, set a budget and stick to it. The truth is that people will much prefer thoughtful presents rather than you just spending a large amount of money on something they don’t really want or need. Christmas dinner can easily be done on a budget; if you’re having people over then make sure you ask them all to contribute which can help to bring down costs too.

Plans Things That You Want To Do

It is a wise idea to take charge of some of the planning and get organising some things that you would like to do. For example, if you don’t fancy heading out then be proactive and arrange a Christmas movie night at your house – that way everyone comes to you and you’ll feel less pressure to go out and socalise when you are invited because you’ll have done your Christmas catch-up with everyone. So, if there are any Christmas events happening that you think would be fun to attend, get organising your friends and family now so that they can come with you.

Ask For Help

It is all well and good putting all of these steps into place, but sometimes things can just get too much. It isn’t your fault, but reaching out to someone for help is a must. Online counselling can give you the opportunity to talk things through with a professional but also get an objective reaction and advice to your concerns. This can help you understand how you are feeling and what has triggered you to feel that way, which is a great tool to help you cope with everything that is being thrown at you.
