Whether it is talking to your friends, chatting to your employer or reaching out for help and advice, there are many times when communication is important. Most of us communicate with others throughout the day without even giving it a second thought, but actually, it does wonders for our well-being. If there are times when we’re unable to communicate in the way we usually do, most of us feel the strain of things – so today, let’s look at the importance of communication for wellbeing.
Relationships are Important
Whether you’re thinking about friendships, romantic relationships or even the relationship you have with the people you work with, they’re all important. Not only are they all important, but they’re important for different reasons and in different ways. What is essential to remember is that we all need and take different things from relationships, so communicating these needs helps a relationship to be nurtured and to grow. Most of us assume that communicating comes down to conversation, but actually different relationships have different needs. For example, a romantic relationship may require physical touch or acts of kindness to grow; it’s all about communicating in a way that you need and in a way that the particular relationship dictates.
You Should Be Telling People How You Feel
One of the things to remember when it comes to the importance of communication is that people don’t know how you are feeling unless you tell them. Telling people how you feel and what you would like as an outcome is essential for any relationship that you wish to be successful. That doesn’t mean that the person is going to be able to immediately do what you require, but it does mean that they are aware of your needs and you can work together to meet at a compromise that works for you both. By hiding what you are feeling and just assuming that the other person knows what you need, you’re setting yourself up for a time when you aren’t going to feel great because your needs aren’t being met.
Look After Others
Communication is important for everyone, so speaking to loved ones and asking how they are feeling really can make all the difference. Not everyone feels comfortable in reaching out and asking for help, so by offering to start the conversation you can take that worry away. There aren’t always big gestures that people need and there won’t always be a major issue, but sometimes a conversation can really make the difference to how someone is feeling. Make sure that your loved ones know you’re available to talk if they need anything, but also make sure that you are open to reaching out for help if you need it.
Reaching Out For Help
If you are struggling with communication or you’re not feeling as happy as you could be then reaching out for help is a great first step to make. For many people reaching out to a friend or family member can be enough, but if that isn’t or you don’t feel able then speaking to a private psychiatry service can make all the difference. It is essential that you don’t feel ashamed when it comes to reaching out for help, because at the end of the day if you need it you need it. None of us would feel at all ashamed in asking for help for a broken bone so why should mental health be any different? In fact, speaking to a professional and getting some unbiased, practical advice can be a great step in starting to feel better.
Whether it’s a chat with friends over a glass of fizz, speaking to our employer about our needs, communicating within a romantic relationship or reaching out for professional help there is so much to be said for opening up a healthy and honest line of communication. It generally steps issues from whirring around inside your head and instead becomes something that you can tackle with someone else and a majority of the time, just this simple act can make things seem all the better.
