Is My Child Old Enough to be Left at Home Alone?

There are many different opinions when it comes to the right age and time for a child to be left at home alone. The truth is, no matter what people say, there is no real number that can be set in stone for what is an appropriate age for a child to experience this. A one size fits all concept does not apply to this situation at all, with all factors depending on the child themselves. So, what is it that needs to be put in place in order for a child to safely be left at home alone?

Here are some top tips from a lower school in Golders Green on whether your child is ready or not for this big step.

Young children

Those that belong to the category of babies, toddlers and young children should never be left home alone under any circumstances. The rules actually say that children at this age shouldn’t even be left in a room alone for too long as it puts them at risk to accidents and harm.

Below 12

Children below the age of 12 are capable of sitting in a room by themselves, going to the toilet and feeding themselves, but are still not suitable for being left at home alone. This is due to them still not having developed the maturity and understanding that is needed to be trusted to be left alone at home.

Teenagers

At this age, your child will be capable enough to walk themselves to school and have the understanding of how to avoid dangers and what needs to be done if faced with a problem. Whilst they can be left at home for short amounts of time whilst you travel back from work or run an errand, it still isn’t recommended to leave them alone overnight. Talk to your child before making any plans to get an understanding of their views too.
