If you want your child to get ahead at school or are looking for a way to overcome learning loss over the holidays, there are a number of learning opportunities outdoors. We have teamed up with a prep school in Hertfordshire to share 5 outdoor learning activities that you can explore with your child.
Astronomy
The night sky is mesmerising and can be used to teach children about the moon, stars, and everything else in the solar system using a telescope. It’s a great way to get children excited about science and can be done from your backyard.
PE
Physical education forms a vital part of education and can lead to prestigious careers in sports. All you need is space and some grass to cushion any falls and the options are endless. There are also many wide-ranging benefits to playing sports from improved physical health to better sleep, brain health and perseverance.
The Plant Life Cycle
You can teach your child about the plant life cycle by giving them the opportunity to grow their own plants and take care of the ones that you already have. You can also look at how living things interact with each other by looking at how pollination works.
The Water Cycle
This is a geography lesson that you can teach using everything that you already have available. Clouds, soil and impermeable concrete slabs. You can start by examining rainfall, what happens to rain as it dries up and how it responds to different surfaces.
Photography
There are potentially thousands, if not millions of things that your child can photograph in the garden. This can help them to build on their attention to detail and become more observant while learning how to operate a camera and take shots for the most optimal effect.
