Respect is a basic human right which we all deserve to be treated with. It’s also the basis for forming relationships. We all have a moral compass and it’s something which develops from our understanding of what’s right and wrong. It comes from our parents and consideration for others and their feelings. Below are some tips that we’ve designed with the help of a boarding school in Ireland on how to raise respectful children.

Work On Emotional Intelligence

Respect boils down to treating others the way that you’d like to be treated and consideration for their feelings as mentioned above. There are lots of ways that you can help them to do this. For starters, you can teach them about what feelings are and encourage them to put themselves in others shoes. How might they feel if someone were to treat them in a particular way?

Manners

The easiest way to show respect is by being courteous and using manners. They are easily taught through reminders and are simple to remember.

Set The Right Example

It’s also important that they have the right examples set. Children rely on their parents and naturally look up to them. They take from what they see and if that’s unkind and disrespectful behaviour, it’s likely that they will pick up on it too.

Authority

As well as those around them, children must learn to respect rules. There are laws and policies that we all must adhere to. They are in place for a reason and can help them to stay out of trouble. Going back to earlier, the example that you set can really influence your child and the person that they grow up to be. If that’s disobedient and evidently breaking rules, they may be influenced to have the same outlook on authority.

If you have any tips on how to raise a respectful child we’d love to hear them
