Nightly homework and exam prep can sometimes feel like a battle, especially in a home filled with the chaos and distractions of family life. To help your child optimise their study sessions, take a look at these tips from a prep school in London, and create a perfect study space that’s fit for purpose.
Find Some Quiet
Trying to focus at home can be tricky, especially if there are other people around creating noise. Find a quiet corner of your home and make it the designated study spot. A self contained dining room is a great location, or a desk in your child’s bedroom will work too. Just be sure to avoid high traffic areas such as the kitchen and living room to ensure they aren’t disturbed by other members of the family.

Install A Desk
Sitting on the sofa to do work comes with the temptation of flicking on the TV. Studying on a bed is a little too relaxing and won’t optimise concentration. A desk where they can have all their resources at hand is the ideal location. They are much more likely to be efficient and remain in ‘work mode’, as sitting at a desk as it mirrors the formality of the school setting. If you have no room for a desk, the dining table will work just as well, just be sure there are no distractions around which could lead them to becoming side-tracked.
Encourage Organisation
Having everything they need in situ before they sit down to study is the best way to help them remain on task. Make sure their study space is stocked with stationary, text books, and anything else they may need, to avoid time being wasted hunting around for an errant protractor or pencil sharpener. Installing a clock in their line of sight will help improve their time management, and will reduce the temptation of picking up a phone or tablet to check the time.
