Whether you’re a first-time buyer or you’re selling your existing house in order to buy a new one, getting the purchase right is important. By anyone’s standards buying a new house is a big deal so it stands to reason that you need to do your research and get things right – so here’s an idea of things to consider when buying a house.

Finances

The first thing you need to consider is your finances and affordability. It is important to consider what you can afford to buy now, but also how your circumstances may change in the future and what you’ll do if this happens. The great news is that there are affordability calculates online that can help – and speaking to a mortgage advisor is a good idea too. If you have a house to sell then getting a couple of valuations from local estate agents can help with working out what money you have to put towards a new purchase.

Your Needs

Once you have sorted out the financial side of things, you need to consider what your needs are. This means looking at what space you need in the house – how many bedrooms, do you need a space to work from home and would like you like a garden for example. Consider what you need from outside the house and the general location too – what is parking like, do you need access to public transport and what do local school reviews come up like? There are plenty of ways to research the area you want to live in, just make sure you spend a little time doing it.

The Future

As well as considering the needs of your house now, it is important that you consider the future and how this might change. For example, a 1 bedroom flat might seem like the idea investment now but if you’re planning children in the very near future then this property will quickly become unsuitable and you’ll have the cost of moving again.
