Well, there is no denying that winter is here! We’re in December now which means that we’re approaching a solid few weeks of cold weather. Although we know that we need to wrap up warm when we go outside, we don’t always do everything we can to protect our homes from the cold. With the rising cost of energy, making our homes as good for winter as possible is a must- here are some tips!

Whether or not you have damp in your home, you should consider making sure you have carried out some damp proofing. It is easy to put off damp proofing your home for winter because you haven’t spotted any damp and therefore don’t think there is an issue. However, as with all of these things, it would be much more efficient to ensure that you fixed the problem before it happened. There are likely to be companies that specialise in damp proofing houses in your local area so getting them to come out and take a look at your home and offer any advice on work that might need to be carried out is a great idea.

Protecting Your Home

We’re definitely in ‘pop the heating on’ season, which means that we need to ensure our house is well insulated but also has plenty of fresh air too – If you put lots of damp washing in a room and shut the door with the heating on, you might make the room damp; which is definitely something that you want to avoid. Make sure that you have plenty of airflow through the house; it really does make the difference.

Of course, keeping your home warm during the winter season is a must too. Things like keeping your curtains closed on very cold evenings and using draft excluders can make all the difference. When you do have your heating on make sure that it is working as efficiently as possible for you – keeping doors shut, turning off radiators in rooms that aren’t being used and moving large pieces of furniture away from radiators really does make all the difference.
