Learning to be independent is an experience your child may well enjoy. It’s their chance to explore the world without their hand being held throughout each activity they do, and they can also show you just how well they’re doing. Handling responsibility will give your child the responsibilities and guidance to be themselves and learn to be independent in their own way.

Here are some ways you can help your child learn to be independent.

Use enrichment activities to keep your child focused

A myriad of activities will keep your child engaged and exploratory, and they also help your child learn to be independent. Plenty of schools will facilitate your child’s learning experience by giving them a host of different enrichment programmes or activities to help with their confidence and independence. At many times in a child’s time in school they are going to have to work alone, and even in groups they can learn about being a team player and being respectful.

Show your child how they can own responsibility

Responsibility can be shown in a lot of ways. You could direct your child to picking up chores and tasks in the house, for instance. You can further extend this to asking your child to look after pets, siblings or other family members.

This helps with your child’s awareness of how they can make a difference in the home. Your child also has a chance early on to get used to these different tasks and it will give them a lot of realisation that they’ll one day have to do all of this on their own.

Give your child the chance to make decisions

Making big decisions will help your child learn about how mature they already are. If they can easily make choices without you needing to step in then they’re well on their way to being independent.
