Let’s talk about open-source fonts. Business owners that don’t have a degree in design can take charge of their digital aesthetic by experimenting with these two elements. All too frequently, we become disenchanted with our design projects, losing the initial jubilation somewhere between the fifteenth and sixteenth iterations, failing to translate the original vision into a concrete final draft. At these moments, approaching from an alternate angle can forcibly extract us from the pit of inside-the-box thinking we slip into. Like colour, font is one such angle — a basic but crucial component of design, one that anyone can experiment with. It may refresh your written content, as you find more elegant ways to display text, or it may trigger new design ideas, as you discover a font that lends itself to an image, graphic design or colour scheme. Here are the best resources for open-source font mining. Read More →
It might sound like a tall order, but no matter how small your home is, there’s always room for a little more storage and strategy that can help in the battle against clutter. If you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of possessions, one or two of these space-saving way on how to keep a clutter-free home
Reduce What You Keep at Home
It doesn’t mean throwing things away, buying less, or cutting down on hobbies. It means being a bit savvier with where you keep items you love, and more selective about how you display items at home. Lots of people are taking a modern, seasonal approach to storage, hiring a self storage room for the items they’re not using at any one time of year. Summertime sees all the winter stuff put into self-storage. Things like heavy winter clothing, winter sports gear or car accessories, snow and leaf clearing tools and anything else you use during the colder months, including Christmas decorations and spare blankets or throws.
When winter rolls around again, do a swap. Bring home all your winter kit and put away the summer gear in its place, including all the garden furnishings you want to protect from winter weather, together with barbecues and playthings.
Facilities are all over the country, so there’s bound to be storage in your location.
Use More Storage Furniture
For the things you keep at home, make as much use as you can of furniture that offers storage. Think of end tables with shelves or drawers, coffee tables with built in storage, or footstools, chests, even storage sofas. You can get more storage in the bedrooms by swapping bed frames for divans with drawers, and maximise closet space with inexpensive drawer towers, additional shelves, hooks behind the door or hanger extenders. Try using dividers in drawers to keep socks and smalls organised, or cutlery trays in makeup drawers to manage mascaras, nail polishes or eye shadow palettes.
Maximise Your Floor Space
As far as you can, use walls instead of floors for storage to make a room feel more spacious and provide extra areas for storage and display. Shelving is the obvious answer, but because it’s obvious it’s easy to overlook the benefits and versatility:
- Display your favourite collections while keeping them away from little fingers or curious cats.
- Replace bulky bookcases. An unusual place for a bookshelf is above a doorway, but it works.
- Fit shelves in awkward or underused areas such as alcoves or cubby holes under the stairs.
- Use cube or modular shelving for a modern, streamlined display area. It’s good in kid’s rooms too for books or toys and games.
When children need more floor space, consider a raised platform bed with storage beneath. If you’re fitting shelving or installing bookcases in tot’s rooms, remember to fit them at kid-height so they can reach.
Create Activity Zones
In open-plan areas, making zones for different activities can help keep clutter down by encouraging all the people in the household to keep relevant items where they’re needed.
Ideas for zones include:
- Quiet areas for reading or study,
- Office areas for school homework or professional home working,
- Dining areas or breakfast bars in the kitchen.
Whatever method you use to control household clutter, try and get everyone on board so you can all work together. There’s nothing more annoying than constantly going around picking up after people, but constant nagging can be counterproductive. If you can make it a family project, you’ll have more chance of long-term success, and all the family will enjoy a more spacious-feeling home.
